Language Tip of the Week 8: Binary Choice

Transcript:

Hi, this is Cherie, the Principal Speech Pathologist at Apex Speech and Language, here to bring you another Language Tip of the Week.

This week's Language Tip is binary choice.

Binary choice involves giving your child only two options when you're asking them something.

For example, during play, you might ask, "Do you want to play with the dolls or the animals?"
During snack time, you might ask, "Do you want the pear or the apple?"
And during book time, you might ask, "Do you want to read the unicorn book or the dinosaur book?"

By giving your child only two options, you're reducing cognitive load while also increasing vocabulary by introducing new words in different contexts.

With binary choice, you can also model correct sentence structures by saying, "I want to play with the animals."

Using binary choice helps your child with decision-making and increases their confidence in communication and participation.

And that's your Language Tip of the Week! We'll see you next week.
