Language Tip of the Week 1: Follow their Lead
Transcript:
Hi, I'm Cherie, the Principal Speech Pathologist at Apex Speech and Language. I'm here to bring you our Weekly Language Tip.
Now, this language tip is going to be really good for the parents of our preschoolers and toddlers. Today, we're going to talk about following our child's lead.
So, if our child is playing with us and they want to play with a firetruck, we'll follow their lead and play with them. If they want to play with the blocks, we'll follow their lead again and play with the blocks. It doesn't matter if they switch between activities quickly.
If they want to lift up the ladder, we might say, "Up, up, up!" and "Down!" If they want to open the door, we'll say, "Open" and "Close." If they want to zoom it across the table, we might say, "Zoom!"
And if they want to change and play with blocks, that's okay! We'll play with the blocks now. If they want to stack them up, we'll say, "Stack up, up!" Make it as tall as you can, and then "Crash!" when they all fall down.
It's okay for kids to change activities quickly. All we have to do is follow their lead and talk about what they're doing.
